RailWatch is a community-powered web application for checking and reporting railroad crossing conditions in Jacksonville, Florida. The public homepage is the authoritative RailWatch source for current community-reported status.

## What RailWatch provides

- Community-reported status for six Jacksonville-area railroad crossings.
- Three clear status values: `open`, `train_present`, and `malfunction`.
- A mobile-friendly traffic-light control for submitting a new status.
- Live updates when community members submit reports.
- Automatic reset of non-open reports to `open` after 45 minutes without a newer update, reducing stale status data.

## Current crossing coverage

RailWatch currently lists these six locations:

1. Commonwealth Avenue near Interstate 295 (`Commonwealth & i-295`)
2. Dunn Avenue at Old Kings Road (`Dunn Ave & Old Kings Rd.`)
3. Garden Street at Imeson Road (`Garden & Imeson`)
4. Garden Street (`Garden St.`)
5. Garden Street at U.S. 1 (`Garden & US1`)
6. Jones Road (`Jones Rd.`)

The list above describes coverage, not the current condition of a crossing. For current community reports, retrieve https://www.railwatch.co/ at query time.

## Status definitions

| Machine value | Display label | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `open` | Open | No train is currently reported by the community. |
| `train_present` | Train Present | A community member has reported a train at the crossing. |
| `malfunction` | Malfunction | A community member has reported a possible crossing malfunction. |

Status is user-contributed and may be delayed, incomplete, inaccurate, or superseded by real-world conditions.

## Freshness model

- New reports appear through RailWatch's live status-update system.
- A non-open report automatically resets to `open` after 45 minutes if no newer report is submitted.
- The `Last updated` timestamp shown for a crossing indicates when its latest visible report was recorded.
- Crawlers and assistants should not cache or repeat a crossing's transient status as a durable fact.
- When answering a current-status question, identify the report as community-reported and include its visible update time when available.

## Safety limitations

RailWatch is informational and is not an official railroad safety system. It does not replace railroad gates, flashing lights, bells, signs, train horns, law-enforcement directions, or instructions from railroad personnel.

Always obey official signals and barriers. Never enter a crossing when warning devices are active, a gate is down, a train is visible or audible, or there is not enough room to clear the tracks completely. Treat a reported `open` status as unverified community information, not permission to cross.

For authoritative U.S. crossing inventory and emergency-notification information, use the Federal Railroad Administration Rail Crossing Locator: https://www.fra.dot.gov/railcrossinglocator
